What Our People Say

Accounting

Hi, I'm Jessica and I am a Manager in the Accounting Advisory Services department. While I was always certain I wanted to go to university, when I finished my A-levels in 2011 I was still unsure what course I wanted to take, so I decided on having a gap year. During this time, I worked with PwC for seven months to find out whether I enjoyed accounting or not. It just so happens I did and in 2015 I graduated from Cardiff University with a degree in Accounting.

In January 2016, I joined PwC's Accounting Advisory Services department as an Associate studying towards my Chartered Certified Accountant qualification with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Three years later, with the support of PwC, I became a member of ACCA and was also promoted to Senior Associate. During this time, I worked on a large portfolio of clients in different industries, assisting them with the preparation of their accounts and providing them with accounting advice when required. As a Senior Associate, I also began reviewing the work of others and coaching new graduates who joined the team. This role gave me great new skills in leadership and forming new kinds of relationships.

In January 2020, I was promoted to Manager and still learning so much at the firm. There is such a variety of services we provide and a diverse workforce and therefore, there is always so much to learn from everything we do and everyone we work with.

Assurance

I graduated with a degree in Philosophy in 2006 and spent the following 8 years teaching in Japan, running my own small business. Looking for a change in career, I joined PwC in September 2015 as an Associate in the Audit department. I was attracted to the firm’s Graduate Trainee Programme as it allowed me to gain experience within a number of different industries whilst simultaneously gaining a valuable professional qualification. I successfully qualified as a chartered accountant with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and progressed from an Associate to a Senior Associate and then a Manager. During this time I worked with a diverse range of clients including casinos, car dealerships, international coal mines, petroleum suppliers, investment vehicles, banks and insurance companies.

Insolvency & Corporate Services

I joined PwC in October 2020 as manager within the insolvency department. PwC is known for being a dominant firm in liquidations locally, boasting an impressive portfolio, so I was looking forward to working with Edgar Lavarello and Luke Walsh, the licenced insolvency practitioners in the firm and learning from their experiences. To date, my experience at PwC has exceeded my expectations. Both Edgar and Luke are great mentors who encourage development. Within the insolvency department, I manage both solvent and insolvent liquidations from start to finish. Both processes are different, with the insolvency process being more complex, which is where my legal experience is required. PwC welcomes legal qualifications to encourage a varied skill set within the firm. As well as working with great people, there is always the opportunity to move between departments in order to develop here at PwC. Since joining, I am also assisting with the development of the Corporate Services department, where I am able to build on my existing company management experience. PwC offers a wealth of knowledge and experience and I look forward to developing my career further with the firm.

IT

I studied Business & Management Studies at university and graduated in 2016. I realised I wanted to go down the route of IT and so decided on doing a masters is MSc Information Technology at Bournemouth University. I graduated from my masters in 2017 and then took a gap year to travel to Australia and New Zealand.

In October 2018 I joined PwC as an Associate in the IT team. During my time here, no single day has been the same. There are always different projects, different issues and different clients to work with. The diverse nature of working here is what I enjoy the most.

In July 2021, I was promoted to Senior Associate within the IT departmet, which has led me to leading more projects and taking ownership of certain every day tasks.

During my time here, PwC has offered me a vast range of experiences and I'd therefore recommend anyone who's looking to develop or gain experience, in any of our departments, to reach out to us.

Tax

I graduated from university with a degree in  Accounting and Finance in 2011. I joined PwC Gibraltar's Accounting and Advisory Services department after graduating university, building on the foundations of accounting and developing myself professionally. Following 3 years of practical experience, I qualified as a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) in 2014. I have since become a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA). I left PwC to explore an opportunity in industry as a management accountant at a local ship repair yard managing project costing analysis and developing internal controls. After a year, I moved to a financial services company assuming the role of Senior Fund Administrator. This role exposed me to more regulatory orientated activities working closely with lawyers and the GFSC.

I moved back to PwC Gibraltar in 2018 as an assistant manager within the Tax department fulfilling a very diverse role which incorporated corporate and personal tax as well providing tax consulting services for local and multinational firms alike and was promoted to manager in 2019. In addition to the core tax work I assist with corporate restructuring, tax planning and mergers and acquisitions. My responsibilities also incorporate a corporate services function which includes corporate registrations, assisting with statutory annual filings and Companies House filings. I recently assumed responsibility for managing our outsourced payroll services team and will be assisting with the ongoing management of some of our Fund clients, following the recent incorporation of the Fund Administration department.

PwC Gibraltar has provided me with the tools and resources to experience and develop various skill sets in different areas of financial services. Building knowledge and experience within various fields of financial services. The resulting knowledge I have gained from this experience has moulded me into a very flexible and well rounded accounting professional.
